Mahayana
This
is the second of the two great councils of
Buddhist orders, occurring about a 100 years
of Buddha's death when the Mahasanghikas
(the Great Order) broke away from the
traditional order on account of matters of
discipline as well as doctrine. Discarding
the old order as `the lesser
vehicle'(Hinayana), they called their order
`the bigger vehicle'(Mahayana).They offered
salvation to all and its scriptures claimed
to represent the final doctrines of the
Buddha which had been revealed only to his
spiritually advanced followers.
